Section 02 / Diagnosis

Where Lenovo laptops actually fail

Lenovo runs from business ThinkPads to Legion gaming machines, and each range has its own characteristic failure.

01

USB-C power delivery

ThinkPads moved to charging over USB-C, which puts a negotiation controller between the charger and the board. When that controller fails the laptop takes no charge from anything, on any port, and looks like a dead battery. It is a board-level repair.

02

Power rails

A dead ThinkPad is normally one shorted rail rather than a dead board. The rails come up in sequence and are measured until the one holding the machine down is identified.

03

Hinges and convertible mechanisms

Yoga and IdeaPad hinges take more travel than a conventional lid, especially on 360-degree designs where the display folds fully back. The mounting points give first, then the display cable running through them.

04

Docking and port circuitry

ThinkPads live on docks, which means their ports get used far harder than average. Worn connectors and the circuitry behind them are replaceable rather than a reason to retire the machine.

Why ThinkPads are worth repairing

A ThinkPad is designed for a long service life, and the people who own them tend to want to keep them. That makes component-level repair the right economics: a failed charging controller on a machine that is otherwise perfectly good is a repair, not a reason to start over.

Section 06 / Questions

Before you book

My ThinkPad will not charge from any USB-C port or charger. Is the battery finished?

Almost certainly not. When a laptop refuses to charge from every port and every charger, the fault is upstream of the battery, in the power delivery controller that negotiates charging. That is a board-level repair, and replacing the battery first is the most common wasted spend on this fault.

Is an older ThinkPad worth repairing?

Usually yes, more than most laptops. They are built for a long service life, so a machine with one failed circuit is often otherwise in excellent condition. The diagnostic tells you what actually failed and what it costs, and you decide from there.

The hinge on my Yoga has gone loose. Can it wait?

It should not. Convertible hinges travel much further than a standard lid, so the mounting points and the display cable behind them take more punishment. The damage compounds with every use and drags the case and screen into the repair.

Do you work on Legion gaming laptops?

Yes. They run hot and draw hard, which makes thermal faults and power delivery failures more common. Both are diagnosed under sustained load with monitoring attached rather than at idle.
